Weekly reports on volcanic activity worldwide.

Volcano Watch
Volcano Watch is a weekly newsletter written by the scientists at the US Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. Not all the articles concern Hawaiian volcanism.

Smithsonian's Global Volcanism program
Has catalogue of all volcanoes active during the Holocene, with clickable map.

NASA's Earth Observatory
A superb site with weekly updates of satellite images showing global geohazards - dust storms, volcanic eruptions, algal blooms, floods, fires. Also anthropogenic features such as forest clearance in Amazonia.

University of Colorado's Natural Hazard's Center
Acts as "a national and international clearinghouse for information on natural hazards and human adjustments to hazards and disasters."

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
Useful for weather, climate and ocean data, news. Great source of North American and Hawaiian satellite weather images.

Florida Department of Environmental Protection
The department's site combines high-quality educational media and scientific data about those environmental aspects of Florida that are unique. You can access downloadable AutoCAD *.dxf files showing geological maps from the county level to smaller scales plus other GIS files, lithological logs from boreholes and detailed information on the State's oil and gas industry. Currently featured on its home page is a related web site about Florida's unique hydrogeology and its famous springs. A well-designed, easy to use site.

European Environment Agency
The European equivalent of the EPA. A good site with themed sections (water, air etc)

Some useful information on UK regulation and environmental news.

News and comment from the web

Geoscience news abounds on the web, largely as a result of the growing interest in environmental issues (particularly geohazards). The following sites - all of which we have visited to check their relevance - carry earth science news or comment. Some (like the New Scientist) are of general interest, others are aimed more specifically at geoscientists

Geological Society
For a very useful overview of the day's top stories, visit this UK site which has a digest of geological and environmental news from sources around the world.

Geotimes
The AGI's Geotimes site has a well–produced News Notes section with background to newsworthy geological research, and longer feature articles.

BBC Sci–tech News
The BBC's general sci–tech news site, but updated daily and usually with something of interest to earth scientists. Particularly strong on planetary science and environmental science stories.

CNIE
The US National Council for Science and the Environment. News of US funding issues.

ENN
The Environmental News Network Inc. A great site for environmental and related news – you can have free basic membership, or delux membership and receive regular email news updates. You can search through five years' worth of news archives for geological stories.

NASA
Keep in touch with the latest on NASA missions, planetary science, satellite shots of geo–events, Hubble Telescope, etc.

Geology.com
Brad Cole's big geology news portal.Has a dictionary and other useful stuff.

Palaeontology News
Richard Cowen (a Blackwell author) at UC Davis gives an excellent and well maintained summary of geological news worldwide. There is a Geology and a Palaeontology section.

NAS
The National Academies site has lots of (American) general science news, and you can use the search engine to pull out geological stories.

The New Scientist
Even without subscribing you can get a useful summary of the week's top science stories, and access archive news from previous Issues. There is usually something of interest to the earth scientist here.

Nature's Science Update
Nature's Science Update carries science news stories updated daily. Plenty of interest for the earth scientist. An excellent site.

Reliefweb
A United nations OCHA project, gives latest news of humanitarian disasters worldwide – including geohazards such as earthquakes, floods and volcanic eruptions.

Global Disaster Watch
Global Disaster Watch is a doom–laden site and not for the anxious, but does contain some useful news of geohazards and other phenomena – meteor showers, Tsunami, earthquakes etc.
